  33.      Chenodiol tablets should be stored at room temperature in a tightly
  34. closed container.

  36. USES

  38.      This medication is used to dissolve gallstones in individuals who cannot
  39. tolerate surgery.  Chenodiol is a naturally occurring bile acid that blocks
  40. the body's production of cholesterol.  This action leads to gradual
  41. dissolution of cholesterol gallstones.
  42.  
  43. TREATMENT
  44.  
  45.      In order to obtain the maximum benefit from this medication, you should
  46. take it with food or milk.  It is important to continue taking this medication
  47. for the entire time prescribed by your doctor (usually six months to two
  48. years), even if your symptoms disappear.  If you stop using this drug too
  49. soon, your symptoms could recur (the gallstones may not have completely
  50. dissolved).
  51.      If you miss a dose of this medication, take the missed dose as soon as
  52. possible, unless it is almost time for the next dose.  In that case, do not
  53. take the missed dose at all; just return to your regular dosing schedule.  Do
  54. not double the next dose.

  56. SIDE EFFECTS
  57.  
  58.      Minor.
  59.  
  60.      Constipation, diarrhea, gas, heartburn, loss of appetite, nausea, stomach
  61. cramps, or vomiting.  These side effects should disappear as your body adjusts
  62. to the medication.
  63.      If diarrhea continues to be a problem, contact your doctor.
  64. Antidiarrheal medications may be effective for short periods, or your doctor
  65. may want to decrease your dose of chenodiol.
  66.      To relieve constipation, increase the amount of fiber in your diet (fresh
  67. fruits and vegetables, salads, bran, and whole-grain breads), exercise, and
  68. drink more water (unless your doctor directs you to do otherwise).

  71.  
  72.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  73. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  74. yellowing of the eyes or skin.

  76. INTERACTIONS
  77.  
  78.      Chenodiol may interact with several other types of medications:
  79.      1. Cholestyramine, colestipol, and aluminum-containing antacids can
  80. decrease the absorption of chenodiol from the gastrointestinal tract.
  81.      2. Estrogen-containing drugs, oral contraceptives (birth control pills),
  82. probucol, and clofibrate can counteract the effectiveness of chenodiol.
  83.      Before you start to take this medication, BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR
  84. about any other medications you are currently taking, especially if you are
  85. taking any of those listed above.

  87. WARNINGS
  88.  
  89.      * Be sure to tell your doctor about any unusual or allergic reactions you
  90. have had to any medications, especially to chenodiol.
  91.      * Tell your doctor if you now have or if you have ever had biliary tract
  92. disease, blood vessel disease, colon cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, liver
  93. disease, or pancreatitis.
  94.      * Body weight and diet influence the formation and dissolution of
  95. gallstones.  A high-fiber, low-fat diet and weight reduction are recommended
  96. to increase the effectiveness of chenodiol.
  97.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  Although extensive
  98. studies in humans have not been conducted, this medication has caused birth
  99. defects in the offspring of animals that received large doses of it during
  100. pregnancy.  Also, tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding.  It is not known
  101. whether chenodiol passes into breast milk.
